"Kenneth I (Cináed mac Ailpín) is an almost mythical figure, and Scottish folklore is awash with gripping but unproven stories about his life. When he was born in the Gaelic Kingdom of Dál Riata, the area was dominated by the more powerful Pictish kingdom, and his father Ailpín, had been beheaded for fighting a Pictish king. The Pictish kingdom was largely destroyed by 839AD, partly by brutal Viking raids. Thanks to a power vacuum and a belief that he had royal blood, Kenneth seized power first of the Picts, and a few years later was made King of the Scots at Scone Palace, which was the home of the Stone of Destiny until it was taken by Edward of England in the late 12th century.

Kenneth MacAlpin effectively founded a new dynasty that resulted in the Pictish and Gaelic kingdoms forming the Kingdom of Alba, and this new entity evolved to become Scotland."
